MVCB hosts VISITOR SAFETY CONFERENCES for 2017

Maui Visitors Bureau coordinates a series of visitor safety conferences to be held at the Grand Wailea Resort on November 29th (8am-12pm) and on the West side at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa on December 6th (8am-12pm). Please alert any hospitality industry staff to sit in on these free events to learn more about visitor safety. The Hana Highway Regulation committee will be making a presentation on the Road to Hana Code of Conduct among a panel of other county and state officials providing their insight on respective areas of expertise. To learn more please contact the Maui Visitors Bureau.

HCA introduces regulatory initiative.

The Hana Community Association board votes to adopt the Hana Highway Regulation as an initiative and publishes The Road to Hana Code of Conduct as first objective.

Peru introduces new rules for visiting Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu is unarguably one of the most famous and popular sites in South America and an iconic site within the world of travel. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

But Machu Picchu’s popularity could also be a curse. The number of visitors to Machu Picchu each year has grown from the low 100,000s in the 1980s, to a peak of nearly 1.4 million tourists in 2014 – an approximate increase of 700%! This increased traffic is slowly “wearing away” the famed site.

Haleakala inititates sunrise reservation protocol.

This program is being initiated for visitor and employee safety and to protect natural and cultural resources, according to the National Park Service website. Beginning next year, park officials will start developing a long term plan to manage visitor traffic at the summit during sunrise hours. ‘ Read more by clicking here

Italy imposes limits on visitors.

Italy plans to severely reduce the number of tourists visiting the Cinque Terre UN world heritage area this summer because the rugged coastal area risks being wrecked by coach parties and cruise ships.

Growing concerns over North Shore traffic and congestion.

We look forward to assisting the North Shore community regarding the issue of overcrowding at Ho'okipa Beach Park. Although the site offers a great perspective of Maui coastline, the parking and facilities lack the ability to host the amount of vehicles and individuals that currently pay visit to the park on a daily basis. In addition, the turtle nesting site has been a subject of concern based on the attraction it has become.

Aloha, a community meeting is scheduled for October 17th in Hana. Please continue to check back here or enroll for membership to be updated on place and time which are pending announcement. The interest has grown therefore we are in the process of securing a larger venue to be set at a most convenient time for the majority of East Maui residents to participate. We look forward to gathering resident perspective of the issues affecting Hana Highway.

The Hana Highway, particularly the portion that stretches from Paia to Hana, is scenic and popular, but that appeal among tourists is causing problems that appear to be escalating, as motorists slow or stop to take pictures or park on both sides of the highway, including its narrow bottlenecks.
