The Hana Highway Information project will implement measures for civil safety along the Road to Hana activity route by focusing on two objectives: increasing visitor access to regional information and providing a mechanism for traffic control.

The first objective is to build out a standardized information platform to focus on visitor preparedness for the Road to Hana activity. The second objective is to train and position residents at sites known to fester tourism impacts in order to help encourage more compliance with local laws and cultural sensitivities. The overarching goals are to educate guests of East Maui and decrease illegal parking, trespassing on private property and unlicensed commercial activity in order to create better visitor experience outcomes which will in turn, restore resident sentiment for tourism. Some community economic benefits of this project are workforce development and advocacy for businesses that are licensed to conduct such operations.

The project will subsequently utilize the highway positioning of Stewards to conduct a sustainable tourism assessment; compiling traffic and site surveys that includes the monitoring of site usage, visitor behavior, commercial activity and logging resident input. This will produce insights for our local government, the visitor industry and our community to help guide informed decision making as it relates to longterm planning. The project will alleviate visitor impacts during the service implementation period and provide a proof of concept for resident-led tourism management. This will create a solution retrofitted specifically for the Hana Highway.
